Gynecomastia, or the abnormal development of male breasts, is a fairly common (yet no less embarrassing) problem for many men. The condition can range from a mild protrusion of the nipples to severe enough to look like actual female breasts. Gynecomastia can be caused by hormonal conditions or develop as a side effect of certain drugs or medications, but often has no identifiable cause. Gynecomastia can result in low self-esteem, social withdrawal, avoidance of certain situations and clothing, and even depression.

In some cases, gynecomastia treatment may be partially or fully covered by your existing health insurance plan. However, if you’re concerned over the potential costs of your male breast reduction, we offer CareCredit and other financing options that make your procedure even more affordable.
Dr. Truong offers a thorough and comprehensive consultation where you can get the details on all of your cosmetic options. He’ll take the time to answer each and every one of your questions.
Gynecomastia is more than the appearance of “man boobs” or a symptom of being overweight. Instead, true gynecomastia is the development of glandular breast tissue that interrupts the masculine lines of the chest. While the cause of gynecomastia isn’t always understood, male breast reduction can help improve the aesthetic appearance of the chest along with helping you feel more positive about your body.
At your consultation, Dr. Truong will talk with you about your personal hopes for the surgery and explain the types of results he feels you can expect to see. He’ll also perform a physical exam to ensure that you’re a good candidate for the procedure, and to determine which surgical approach may work best.
During this time, you should feel free to ask any questions you may have about your surgery or recovery. Dr. Truong will also give you more detailed background information, including pre-op and post-op instructions.
Dr. Truong cautions against many non-surgeons who claim to treat gynecomastia with liposuction alone. While liposuction of the male chest may help in some cases of pseudogynecomastia, true gynecomastia requires the surgical excision of glandular breast tissue, which can only be performed as part of male breast reduction. At the same time, Dr. Truong may also tighten the skin and resize the nipples and areola if needed.
You may feel sore or uncomfortable following male breast reduction. Swelling and some bruising are both normal after gynecomastia surgery, but should gradually improve over the next few weeks. Most men return to light work duty after about a week, although exercise and other vigorous activities should wait a bit longer.
After treatment for gynecomastia, your chest should look firmer and more masculine. Most men feel more positive about their self-image, and regain confidence about how their bodies look both in and out of clothing.
